What to Wear to Indian Dance Class: A Complete Guide for Beginners
One of the most common questions new students ask before their first Indian dance class is: What should I wear? The answer changes depending on whether you're just starting out or preparing for a performance.
For Your First Few Classes: Keep It Simple
You don't need a traditional costume for your first Indian dance class. Comfort and freedom of movement are all that matter in the beginning. What works well: fitted leggings, salwar pants, a fitted top or kurta, and bare feet. Avoid: jeans, very loose flowing skirts, and heavy jewellery.
For Kathak: The Traditional Costume
Ghagra (flared skirt). The flowing, flared skirt central to Kathak's visual identity. When you spin, the ghagra fans out beautifully.
Choli (fitted blouse). Worn with the ghagra, allowing full arm movement.
Dupatta (scarf). A long scarf draped elegantly over the shoulder — used expressively in storytelling.
Ghungroo (ankle bells). Small bells tied around the ankles that amplify the sound of footwork. Beginners typically start wearing ghungroo after a few months of training.
Hair and makeup. For performances, Kathak dancers traditionally wear their hair in a bun adorned with flowers or ornaments. Stage makeup is bold and expressive.
For Semi-Classical Bollywood: Colourful and Expressive
For class: leggings and a fitted top, or salwar kameez. For performances: vibrant, colourful lehengas or salwar suits, coordinated group costumes, and bold accessories that complement the energy of the dance.
A Note on Colour
Indian dance costumes are known for their vivid, joyful colours — deep reds, royal blues, emerald greens, and gold. When choosing your practice wear, feel free to embrace colour. It's part of the spirit of the dance.
