How to Prepare for Your First Kathak Class: A Beginner's Guide
Taking your first Kathak class is an exciting step. Whether you're a complete beginner, a parent enrolling your child, or someone returning to dance after years away — the first class can feel a little daunting. The good news? You don't need any experience, any special equipment, or any prior knowledge of Indian classical dance. You just need to show up with an open mind and a willingness to learn.
What to Wear
Comfort and freedom of movement are the priorities for your first class. You don't need a traditional Kathak costume right away — that comes later. What works well: fitted leggings, salwar pants, a fitted top or kurta, and bare feet. Avoid: jeans or stiff trousers, very loose flowing skirts, and heavy jewellery.
What to Bring
A water bottle, a small notebook if you like to take notes, and an open mind — the most important thing you can bring.
What to Expect in Your First Class
Warm-up. You'll start with a gentle warm-up — stretching the legs, ankles, and spine.
The foundational stance. Kathak has a specific starting position: feet turned outward, knees slightly bent, spine tall and lifted.
Basic footwork (Tatkar). Tatkar — rhythmic footwork — is the heartbeat of Kathak. Even in your very first class, you'll begin learning simple footwork patterns.
Hand gestures (Mudras). You'll be introduced to a few basic mudras — the precise hand gestures that give Kathak its expressive language.
A short combination. By the end of your first class, you'll likely put together a short sequence combining footwork and arm movements.
Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your First Class
Arrive a few minutes early. Don't compare yourself to others. Ask questions freely. Practise a little between classes — even 10 minutes makes a difference. And be patient with yourself. Kathak is a classical art form with centuries of depth. The early stages are about building a foundation.
